■アリストクラシー（貴族主義）　aristocracy △index

アリストクラシー。然り，なぜなら民主主義が本当に理解され＜発達している＞ところでは，民主主義は（私はトーマス・ジェファーソンは正しかったと信じている）アリストクラシーという形式の最も高い次元であるはずだから。
Aristocracy? Yes, because democracy（I believe Thomas Jefferson was right）is to be the highest known form of aristocracy, wherever democracy is really understood and grown.

■ブロードエーカー・シティ　Broadacre City　　　　　　△index

望ましい都市の特徴と土地の自由さとを結びつけて自然で幸福な統一体とすること──そのような再統合をここでブロードエーカー・シティと呼ぶのである。
uniting desirable features of the city with the freedom of the ground in a natural happy union : such reintegration as here called Broadacre City.

真の人間的な都市とは，ブロードエーカーなのである。
The true humane city is Broadacre.

■ブッダ　Buddha　　　　　　△index

ブッダは身代わりでない働き──精神──のみを，すなわち，内から決定される働きのみを信じた。
Buddha believed in nonvicarious effort ─ the spirit ─ only ; that is to say, only in effort disciplined from within.

■集中化　centralization　　　　　　△index

古い封建時代の都市計画からの発達がこれら新たな＜求心的な＞集中化である──人類を破滅させるよう働く非経済的で容認できない力である。
Growing out of the old feudal city-plan are these new centripetal centralizations : unrecognized uneconomic forces at work to destroy mankind.

■コンティニュイティ　continuity　　　　　　△index

壁，天井，床は今や，互いの集まりになるだけでなく，それぞれが表面でも内でも互いに連続しながら＜互いの部分＞になるようにしなさい。どんな部材，備品，設備，いかなるものであっても単に組み立てられたようなものではなく，全てにコンティニュイティを。
Let walls, ceilings, floors now become not only party to each other but part of each other, reaching upon and within one another ; continuity in all, eliminating any merely constructed features as such, or any fixture or appliance whatsoever as such.

■分散化　decentralization　　　　　　△index

まず分散化，そして計画された再統合。近代の芸術と科学とによるわれわれの生活の再解釈が直ちにその実現への道を指し示すであろう。
First decentralization, then planned reintegration. Reinterpretation of our life by modern art and science will soon point the way forward to this realization

■民主主義　democracy　　　　　　△index

われわれは人間と土地とのこの文明──真に有機的である農耕社会──を民主主義と呼ぶ。
We are calling that civilization of man and ground ─ really organic agronomy ─ democracy.

質を犠牲にした量。まさにこれは民主主義の対極にあるものである。
Quantity uprises at expense to quality. This is surely the antithesis of Democracy.

民主主義はまさに個人性の福音である。
Democracy is the very gospel of Individuality.

■奥行　depth　　　　　　△index

新たな拡がり，すなわち奥行を増すことは，ひとが誇らしげに家と呼んでいる新しい建物にあるような単なる拡がりというだけでなく，自由におけるかれの魂の真髄にまで及ぶものである。
New breadths, increased depths, not only in the simple reaches of the new building he proudly calls home but into the very makeup of his faith in freedom.

内在的真実を最も豊かに明らかにするデザインが最良のデザインである。
That design revealing truth of inner being most abundantly is best design.

■大地　earth　　　　　　△index

また端的にそれ（訳注：有機的建築）は，今やかれ（訳注：建築家）によって構造のさまざまな形式として見られた，大地の上の人間のライフの物質的構造である。端的に有機的なものである。
Simply, too, it is the material structure of every man's life on earth now seen by him as various forms of structure ─ in short, organic.

私はこの拡張された水平線を，自由を暗示する人間のライフの 大地─線 として見ている。いつでも。
I see this extended horizontal line as the true earth-line of human life, indicative of freedom. Always.

■教育　education　　　　　　△index

教育の素地が内部的自然から得られるまでは，教育を文化として語ってはならない。
Well, until the groundwork of his education is acquired from interior Nature, do not speak of education as culture.

■形　form　　　　　　△index

今や＜有機的なもの＞となるために，われわれは形と機能とは＜１つ＞であると＜理解する＞ことを学ばねばならない。
Now in order to become organic we will learn to understand that form and function as one.

■地平線　horizon　　　　　　△index

And the horizon keeps widening conveniently for him as he goes.

■自由　freedom　　　　　　△index

いつどこであろうと，＜理想によって内から訓練された＞人間性そのものは自由である。
When and wherever humanity itself, disciplined from within by an ideal, is free.

アメリカの青少年達は，自由は『内から』得られるものだということをもう少し学ぶべきである。
The young American has yet to learn that freedom is earned “from within”.

解放は許され与えられるものであるかもしれないが，自由は与えられるものではない。自由は内からのものである。
Liberty may be granted but freedom cannot be conferred. Freedom is from within.

■個人性　Individuality　　　　　　△index

われわれ「自由な国民」は個人性を人間の有機的実体として──真なる人間性の魂の真髄として──認めねばならない。
We“the Free”should recognize individuality as organic entity of the man : essence of the soul of true manhood.

■インテグリティ　integrity　　　　　　△index

インテグレーションとは，調和した全体の完全な部分でないならば，いかなる部分もそれ自身としてのいかなる価値も持たないことを意味する。
And integration means that no part of anything is of any great value in itself except as it be integrate part of the harmonious whole.

インテグリティは人間自身の＜内なる＞質であり，＜人間自身の＞質である。それゆえそれは建物の中にある。自分以外のいかなる人によっても，外的状況の外側からのいかなる圧迫によっても，それを変更することはできない。インテグリティは内からでしか変わることはできない。なぜなら＜あなたである＞ことは，まさにあなたの中にあるからだ──そのため（あなたが自分の建物を建てようとするように）あなたがあなたの人生を可能な限り最善の方法によって生きようと努力する。内から人をもしくは建物をつくるということは常に困難なことである。なぜなら，浅はかなことと違って，より深くということはそれほどたやすいことではないからだ。
Integrity is a quality within and of the man himself. So it is in a building. It can not be changed by any other person either nor by exterior pressures of any outward circumstances ; integrity cannot change except from within because it is that in you which is you ─ and due to which you will try to live your life（as you would build your building）in the best possible way. To build a man or building from within is always difficult to do because deeper is not so easy as shallow.

■キリスト　Jesus　　　　　　△index

そしてキリストは，内から発展させられたものとしての個人の尊厳と価値とを説いた。『神の王国は汝らの内にあり』──個人性の可能性。
And Jesus taught the dignity and worth of the individual as developed from within. “The kingdom of God is within you”: the potential of individuality.

■老子　Laotze　　　　　　△index

今や建築が達成したこの真実を，老子はこう表現した。『建物のリアリティは，その屋根と壁とにあるのではなく，それらに囲まれた住まわれる内空間にある。』
Laotze expressed this truth, now achieved in architecture, when he declared the ”reality of the building does not consist in the roof and walls but in the space within to be lived in.”

■ライフ　life　　　　　　△index

ライフの翻訳者，すなわち建築家は，何をしようとしているのか。
What is this interpreter of life, the Architect, going to do about it?

ライフは存在する。われわれは存在する。
それゆえわれわれは誠実に愛し正直に働き熱心に探し求める──すべての物の中でただひとつの価値──ライフを。
Life is. We are.
Therefore we will loyally love, honestly work and enthusiastically seek, in all things ── the one thing of Value ── Life.

■素材　material　　　　　　△index

建物の形態は今や，状況の変化に応じて変化する，目的と建物の形態とに関連した，素材の本性をとおして形を取る。
The form of the building now takes its shape by way of the nature of the materials according to purpose and building forms change as circumstances change.

■自然　nature　　　　　　△index

この自然の理想は有機的民主主義の中核に，また有機的建築に横たわっている。
This ideal of Nature lies at the core of organic democracy, and architecture organic.

比較だけによって解釈することは，劣った精神のなせるわざである。分析，即ち自然の探求によって解釈することは，優れた精神のなせるわざである。
The inferior mind learns only by comparisons .But the superior mind learns by analysis:the study of Nature.

いずれにせよ，真なる建築の主要動機は，自然の哲学の響きである。
Mainspring of any true architecture is sound philosophy of Nature.

自然は偉大な教師である──人は自然の教えを受けとめそれに答えることができるのみである。
Nature is the great teacher ─ man can only receive and respond to her teaching.

■ノマド　nomad　　　　　　△index

遊牧の民ノマドは，移りゆく季節の中で，ある場所からある場所へと，大地全体の上を変化の法則──かれらにとっては自然なこと──に従いながら移りゆく。
He, nomad, went in changing seasons from place to place, over the whole earth following the laws of change : natural to him.

■有機的　organic　　　　　　△index

建築はただ本来的であるがゆえに有機的である。
Architecture is organic only because intrinsic.

この「有機的」なる語は「自然」という語同様に，注意深く用いねばならない。
Be warned this word“organic”is like the word“nature.”

有機的建築の根本的性格をカメラで掴むことはできない。なぜなら，それは専ら経験的事態であるからだ。
If one would get the essential character of an organic building, it could not be by camera, inasmuch as it is wholly a matter of experience.

■哲学　philosophy　　　　　　△index

われわれは，哲学が人間自身の＜内＞からの人間の科学であることを発見するであろう。
We will find philosophy to be the science of man from within the man himself.

■プラン　plan　　　　　　△index

私はこの仕事で，建物のグラウンドプランとエレベーションとの調和した関係をつくり出そうと努力してきた。全体が計画であるところのある問題状況に対して，前者はその解決として後者はその表現として。
I have endeavored in this work to establish a harmonioious relationship between ground plan and elevation of these buildings, considering the one as a solution and the other an expression of the conditions of a problem of which the whole is a project.

■プラスティシティー　plasticity　　　　　　△index

いかなる真のプラスティシティーも＜物自体の＞ものであって，決して物の上の（それにあてがわれた）ものではない。
Any true plasticity would be a of the thing itself, never be on it （applied to it）.

■プレファブリケーション　prefabrication　　　　　　△index

有機的でないプレファブリケーションは大量生産による質の低下である。
Inorganic prefabrication : degeneration of quality by mass production.

■原理　principle　　　　　　△index

いかなる原理も全体に及ばずして部分に及ぼうはずがない。
Why any principle working in the part if not working in the whole?

■ルーム　room　　　　　　△index

この「内」なるものの意味またはルームそのものの意味こそが，発現される偉大なものとして見出される。そしてそれは建築として我々が必要とする新しい形態をとるであろう。このような根源はある単なるスタイルとして現れてくることはない。
This sense of the “within” or the room itself（or the room themselves）I see as the great thing to be realized and that may take the new forms we need as architecture. Such a source would never stultify itself as a mere style.

インテグラルな建築においては＜ルーム─スペース そのものが立ち現れてくるべきだ＞。その＜ルーム＞こそが建築と見なされなければならない，さもなくば建築ではない。
In integral architecture the room-space itself must come through. The room must be seen as architecture, or we have no architecture.

■シェルター　shelter　　　　　　△index

私は住宅を，第一に，広々としたシェルターとして居住可能な内部空間と見ていた。私は，建物に見られる＜シェルターとしての意味づけ＞を望んでいる。依然として。
I saw a house, primarily, as livable interior space under ample shelter. I liked the sense of shelter in the look of the building. I still like.

■摩天楼　skyscraper　　　　　　△index

摩天楼は緑豊かな広々とした空間になければならない。田舎においてこそ，それはそのものの美しさを表現できるであろう。
The skyscraper is no longer sane unless in free green space. In the country it may stand beautiful for its own sake.

■魂　soul　　　　　　△index

創造的人間性は，徹頭徹尾，より深い意義としての魂にかかわっている。
Creative manhood, first to last, is concerned with soul as the deeper significance.

われわれの魂は，取ってくるものでも与えられるものでもなく，われわれ自ら昇華させるものである。
Our soul grows more by what we give than by what we take and feed upon.

人間の魂の内にある，この消すことのできない光によって，あらゆるものは育まれ，また育む。
All come to nourish or be nourished by this inextinguishable light within the soul of man.

■構造　structure　　　　　　△index

形態は構造の必然の結果である。形態なしに構造はなく，構造なしには形態はない。
Form is the inevitable result of structure. There is no structure without form, no form without structure.

私にとって構造とは，私がリアリティと呼ぶものの根本に他ならない。私は構造を，全体の「内部的」な意味で言っている。
To me structure is the very basis of what I call reality. I am speaking of structure with an "interior" sense of the whole.

■スタイル　style　　　　　　△index

スタイルは貴重であり不思議な事柄であるが，（小文字の）スタイルは常に（大文字の）スタイルの死んだものである。
Style is a precious, magic circumstance ─ style is, and always, the death of Style.

スタイルは今や土着のものである。
Style now indigenous.

スタイルは内から展開されるものである。
Style develops from within.

■シンプリシティ　simplicity　　　　　　△index

何もないことは，シンプルではあるが，私がここで言わんとするシンプリシティではない。
Plainness, although simple, is not what I mean by simplicity.

シンプリシティは，物の本質の明晰で直接的な表現である。それは物そのものの本性においてある。
Simplicity is a clean, direct expression of that essential quality of the thing which is in the nature of the thing itself.

シンプリシティの唯一の秘密とは，それ自体でシンプルであると見なせるものなど何一つないということである。
This is, I believe, the single secret of simplicity : that we may truly regard nothing at all as simple in itself.

もしわれわれが自然をより深く研究するならば，シンプリシティというものが，形だけを捉えた絵画の制作をも超えて，野の百合にあることを理解するであろう。
If we dig deeper into Nature we will soon understand that simplicity is as far as the lilies of the field beyond any affected pictorializm.

■ユーソニア　Usonia　　　　　　△index

われわれがユーソニアと呼ぶこの連合国家は，硬直した現状を脱して，民主的生活の理想にとって不可欠な分散化の統合へと向かうであろう。ただその時にのみ，われわれは新たな自由へと向かうことができよう。法は人間のために作られているのであり，決してその逆ではない。
this union we are calling Usonia turns from the present static to the integration of decentralization inevitable to our ideal of democratic life, only then will we turn toward the new freedom : laws made for man not man made for laws.

■全体　whole　　　　　　△index

このことはどこであってもいかなるときにも理解されることだが，部分は全体にとっての部分でありまた全体は部分にとっての全体である。
Where and whenever this is understood, the part is to the whole no less than the whole is to the part.

■内　within　　　　　　△index

そしてわれわれは芸術や建築における新たな基準としての，その 内─の─感覚 へ到達するであろう。
And we would arrive at the sense-of-the-within as the new criterion in art and architecture.

建築を有機体と見なし，内から外へ向かっての表現であると見なすこの概念は，２０世紀の建物における全く新しい意味づけである。
This concept of architecture as organic, as expression from within outward, in twentieth century-a new sense of building entirely.

そう，詩と同様に，この建築の感覚は『内』の響きである。われわれはこの感覚を，「内」すなわち心と呼べるかもしれない。
Well, like poetry, this sense of architecture is the sound of the “within.” We might call that “within,” the heart.
